Western Andes

Magic cloud forests full of colorful birds !

 

Very visited by many birders from all around the world, this region must be birded if looking for specialities is the goal since it holds many endemic and near endemic species. It is characterized by biodiverse cloud forest between 800-3800 m. the birding experience focus mainly on the pacific slope that continue to the Chocó jungles, seven large National Nature Parks and several AICAs Project forests of this mountain range.

Antioquia

 

Jardín (The garden): This beautiful old colonial town is a good example of a coffee town; located between 1900-3000 m and surrounded on the eastern slope by Montane cloud forests.

At just a pair of blocks from the town’s central square, we have access to a great display of the Andean Cock-of-the- Rock lek. In the mountains we will have an endemic sunset thanks to flocks of the cheerful Yellow-eared Parrot getting perched on wax palms. 

Munchique Wood-Wren (EN), Purplish-mantled Tanager (NE), Tanager-Finch (NE), Scaled Fruiteater, Golden-crowned Tanager Red-hooded Tanager, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Black-billed mountain Toucan, White-capped Tanager.

 

Chocó

Las Tangaras Reserve: Located on the pacific slope, descending and starting to reach Chocó jungles, the access is made  through western of Antioquia.

Some of its gems: Crested Ant-Tanager, Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager, Toucan Barbet, Violet-tailed Sylph, Chocó Tapaculo and also Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Olivaceous Piha, Tricoloured Brush-Finch, White-headed Wren plus those described on Tatamá National Park.

Risaralda

Montezuma rain forest lodge: Established under the ancient and silent view of the Cerro Tatamá and captivating premontane forest on the pacific slope  in the Tatama National Park.

 

Let’s meet the unique and mythical Gold-ringed and Black-and-gold Tanagers plus more endemics as : Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer, Munchique Wood-Wren, Tatamá Tapaculo, Grayish Piculet;  the near endemics: Velvet-purple Coronet, Yellow-collared Chlorophonia, Bicolored Antvireo, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Black Solitaire, Glistening-green Tanager, Purplish-mantled Tanager, Rufous-throated Tanager, Choco Vireo, Toucan Barbet, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Scarlet-and-white Tanager, Fulvous-dotted Treerunner, Pacific Tuftedcheek, Beautiful Jay.
